This week my husband and I celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Hard to fathom that time! It was during nightclubbing days that we met. Friends at first, as I’m fairly sure it wasn’t his dance moves that lured me in.
This has me reminiscing about how much fun we had on our wedding day. Fortunately, things ran smoothly for us. The biggest issue encountered on the day was my hair, the Jewish curls as I called them. Despite having a hair trial before the wedding day, the hairdresser's curls on the actual day, were so tight, they resembled a Jewish Rabbi’s side curls.
Then, in the car, on the way to the church, my dad felt the need to mention to me “It’s not too late to change your mind!” In all fairness to my husband, he had said this to my sisters on their wedding day’s also.
Our wedding reception was very much a party atmosphere, with my father in law and aunty eagerly hitting the dancefloor, even before the festivities had begun. The DJ had to really work hard to wrap things up on the crowded dancefloor at the end of the night, especially as the bride and groom didn’t want to leave!
Our honeymoon however was another story. Penang, day one - after a dip in the ocean, I emerged spectacularly, with a large golf ball sized lump on my head, after being stung by something nasty.
Then when lying on a poolside sun lounge, in the hotel’s gardens, trying to be all sophisticated whilst drinking my cocktail, a low flying bird pooped on me.
And by the middle of the honeymoon, we’d ventured to Penang’s botanical gardens. Where I was accosted by a native monkey. A family of monkeys had started following me, because I was holding a packet of Twisties and a can of Coke. Then one monkey broke away and started to chase me. Running from the monkey, in a heightened state of panic, I started screaming for my husband at the top of my voice, out of sheer terror. He was nowhere in sight and people were staring at me - the crazy screaming girl. And then I did the only thing I could think of - throw the Coke can straight at the monkey.
That was the beginning of this crazy, fun and awesome marriage, as we look forward with enthusiasm and anticipation to our next 25!
